Gaza - Ma'an - Hamas' armed wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, expressed their commitment to the Egyptian-brokered ceasefire with Israel which began at 6am on Thursday morning.

They issued a statement saying, "This agreement is a necessary stage to ease the suffering of the Palestinians and to strengthen the resistance option. It is not a gift to the [Israeli] occupation in any way."

They added that they are "fully ready for a military strike that would shake Israel if it does not comply with all articles of the approved ceasefire," saying that they would hold Israel responsible for the consequences if the ceasefire is broken by the Israeli side.

With regard to captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, the brigades said "the soldier will not be released until all of the Palestinian prisoners are released from Israeli jails. We assure the families of the prisoners and all of the Palestinians that the issue of the prisoners is at the top of our priorities."

Hamas spokesperson, Sami Abu Zuhri, affirmed the movement's commitment to the ceasefire and its success.

He said that the ball is now in Israel's court, pointing out that just hours before the ceasefire came into effect, the Israeli army killed a Palestinian civilian and injured several others in Johr Ad-Deek.

Abu Zuhri called on the international community to reassess its stance towards Hamas and to respect the outcomes of the Palestinian election won by Hamas.

He added that "the ceasefire proves the failure of all attempts to weaken or topple the Hamas movement by sidelining it."
