THE CANADIAN ISLAMIC CONGRESS
MEDIA COMMUNIQUE

As Zionists mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of a state for-
Jews-only on native Palestinian land on May 14, the Canadian Islamic
Congress is calling on all Canadians this coming weekend -- in churches,
mosques, temples, synagogues and other places of worship -- to pray to God
Almighty for peace and "restoration of justice" to millions of isolated and
displaced Palestinians.

"We cannot underestimate the power of prayer," said Imam Dr. Zijad Delic,
CIC's National Executive Director. "Generations of native Palestinians
deserve not only justice in the abstract -- they deserve a lasting peace
with justice. They have suffered for far too long. People of faith from all
religious backgrounds understand the power of prayer; we are appealing for
their personal and public prayers this weekend."

Shortly after the announcement of the establishment of Israel by Zionist
Jews in 1948, nearly a million Palestinians were forced out of their homes.

From 1948 to the present, even more have been forced out of their homeland
into a permanent diaspora. Today, Palestinian refugees and their
descendants are estimated to number over 4 million people.

Claiming it must maintain its "Jewish character," Israel has refused
repeatedly to recognize any right of Palestinians worldwide to return to
their homes.

Those who still survive in Gaza and the West Bank have existed for more
than four decades under deplorable conditions of deprivation and
restriction caused directly by Israeli military occupation.
