What about UN Resolution 242?

According to Haaretz via Associated Press,
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is litterally
mulling a bill that would compensate Israeli
settlers who leave the West Bank voluntary
and allow the government to dismantle their
settlements behind the Seperation/Apartheid wall.

Israel says it wants to hold on to the huge settlement blocs ringed around Jerusalem and protected by the Seperation Wall which isn't recognized around the world as legal housing for Israeli settlers and it also would split the West Bank in two and cut off the territory from East Jerusalem not mention make life for East Jerusalemites more difficult.

My question is why can't the U.S. not only use the Road Map but also pressure Israel to follow and accept United Nations Resolution 242 which states that no occupying power is allowed to build, transfer or move its citizens into occupied territory? Can UN Resolution 242 be applied to Israel to dismantle the large settlement blocs in East Jerusalem and West Bank as well? Can 242 also be submitted to Congress to remind the representatives that the Seperation Wall and settlement blocs in and around East Jerusalem and the West Bank are illegal and are one of the major obstacles to peace? Regardless of all the excuses made by the settlers and Israeli government, most of the world does not view the illegal settlements as legitimate for the creation of a Palestinian state if the goal is to be achieved.

Saying that "242 should be applied to Israel" is a testament to how much Israel has ignored the UN's resolutions. In fact, resolution 242 was passed with Israel specifically in mind. It doesn't need to just be "applied to this situation"... this is the actual situation that it was written for. Of course, the US and Israel have ignored it completely (along with resolution 338).

  2. Lisa,

    You got it wrong.

Res. 242 is not about population transfer into occupied territory.
This bit of information is out of the IV Geneva Conventions. Since it states there that the state may not transfer its own population and not that citizens of the state may move into occupied territory (do you grasp the difference?) it is not clear whether this is applicable to Israel.

Actually res. 242 demands inter alia secure borders and recognition for Israel. Should the US not pressure the Arab states to comply after all these years?
