rolled into the destroyed airport of Rafah town in
southern Gaza Strip after withdrawing last night
following clashes, witnesses said.
Five tanks and two bulldozers took up positions
in the airport, the only airport in the Gaza Strip
which operated from 1998 until it was closed in
2001, said the witnesses.
In the past years, Israel destroyed large parts
of the airport, including the control tower and the runway.
It was reported that clashes erupted between
Palestinian militants and the Israeli troops on
Tuesday before the vehicles retreating at midnight.
The armed wing of the Democratic Front for the
Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) said that one of its
fighters was injured during the last night clashes,
who was transferred to a Gaza hospital.
Meanwhile, the military wing of Islamic Hamas
movement claimed responsibility for firing several
mortar shells toward the invading forces.
