Books on Israeli Genocide

Don't Be
Silent!

Atrocities, war crimes and genocide -
With the news spilling out about the latest
attacks and blockade by Israel in Gaza, you
don't have to read any of the books listed
below on the Israeli occupation to understand
that this is what Israel is doing. These attacks
and the blockade of food, fuel and medicine
and the shutting off of electricity have resulted
in widespread death and misery. Like many
before him, just yesterday an 18-year-old died
of cancer-related complications since he was
not allowed by Israel to leave Gaza for emergency
care. And, with fuel running out for hospital
generators doctors are facing the choice of
either turning off electricity on babies in the
maternity ward or heart surgery patients or
stop operating rooms.

You do, however, need these books as
ammunition to combat the many lies
coming from the U.S. government and its
corporate media
designed to keep us quiet
about these state-sponsored, U.S.-funded-
and-armed atrocities.

By the way, here's a link to the many
activities going on this weekend to protest
and not remain silent about U.S.-sponsored
Israeli terror in Gaza. Click here: Al-Awda.org.

Take a look, plug in to an activity near you
and make sure you come back here to get
fortified with the truth about the Israeli
occupation and the U.S. role in the
Middle East.

Palestinian Refugees
The Right of Return
Edited by Naseer Aruri

picture

The Palestinians' Right of Return to their homes has been
upheld in international law and United Nations' resolutions
for more than fifty years. Equally, the Right of Return has
been denied by (U.S.-backed) Israel and was supposed
to have been finalized in the Oslo Accords. It is on this
issue of return that the Palestinians are united.

This book includes contributions from a range of
authors, including Edward W. Said, Noam Chomsky,
and Nur Masalha. The chapters cover the historical
roots of the Palestinian refugee question; the
obligations of host countries of refugees under
international law (Lebanon), the role of the U.S.
and the E.U. and the Refugee Question; the
Palestine Liberation Organization and more.
Preface by Elaine C. Hagopian.

The Scar of David
A novel by
Susan Abulhawa

picture

2007 Winner of the Fiction & Literature, Historic
Fiction category in the National Best Book Awards.

Excerpts from review by Judy Greenspan:

How do you clear the debris of misconception and
prejudice from people’s minds about one of the most
misunderstood struggles in history? More importantly,
how do you propel people toward a real understanding
of the Palestinian people’s right to their homeland?
Susan Abulhawa accomplishes these tasks (and more)
with her first novel, The Scar of David.

The Scar of David stands out as more than an
impassioned history of the Palestinian people’s
struggle for their homeland. It is an intricate tapestry,
a living quilt of five generations of Palestinian families,
their lives and deaths, their pain and suffering and most
importantly their love for their homeland—Palestine.

The reader experiences firsthand the "catastrophe"
of Nabka, the heinous forced removal of the Palestinian
people from their homes and the establishment of the
state of Israel and brings us to the Israeli siege of the
city of Jenin.

The Scar of David is a must read for everyone
wishing to learn the truth about the Palestinian struggle.
As a teacher, I would highly recommend its inclusion in
middle school, high school and college classes. As an
American Jew, I believe this book should be read by
Jewish people everywhere who wish to tackle decades
of misconceptions and understand and embrace the
Palestinians’ right to return to their homeland.

A Little Piece of Ground excellent gift for
young Arab and non-Arab readers:
A Little Piece
of Ground
By Elizabeth Laird
with Sonia Nimr

picture

An extraordinary book about war and peace
through the eyes of a young Palestinian boy.

This is a story about Palestinian boys living under
the Israeli military occupation. Theirs is a particular
experience, in a particular time and place, but all
such occupations are harsh, causing great suffering
to the occupied people. The boys in this book stand
for all who live their lives in such circumstances and
manage, against the odds, to go on growing up.

"Read A Little Piece of Ground, and we know what it
is to feel oppressed, to feel fear every day. And we
should know, for this is how much of the world lives."
—Michael Morpurgo, Britain's Children's Laureate

I Saw Ramallah
By Mourid Barghouti
picture

Translated from Arabic by Ahdaf Soueif,
Foreward by Edward Said

"An important literary event....One of the finest
existential accounts of Palestinian displacement
that we now have." —from the Foreward

Winner of the prestigious Naguib Mahfouz Medal,
this fierce and moving work is an unparalleled
rendering of the human aspects of the Palestinian
predicament.

Barred from his homeland after 1967's Six Day War,
the poet Mourid Barghouti spent thirty yers in exile
—shuttling among the world's cities, yet secure in
none of them; separated from his family for years
at a time; never certain whether he was a visitor,
a refugee, a citizen, or a guest. As he returns home
for the first time since the Israeli occupation,
Barghouti crosses a wooden bridge over the
Jordan River into Ramallah, yet he is unable to
recognize the city of his youth.

A tour de force of memory and reflection,
lamentation and resilience, I Saw Ramallah is
a deeply humane book, essential to an
understanding of today's Middle East.

Dishonest Broker:
The U.S. Role
in Israel and Palestine
By Naseer H. Aruri
picture

In this fully revised and updated version of his highly
acclaimed book, The Obstruction of Peace:
The United States, Israel, and the Palestinians,
Naseer H. Aruri dismantles the many myths
about the failed Middle East "peace process."

Aruri analyzes the evolving relationship between
the United States and the two protagonists--the
Palestinians and Israel-- and argues that the U.S.
government, rather than serving as an "honest broker,"
has allowed Israel to use violence and violate
international law to maintain its occupation.

As a result of the U.S.' massive military,
economic, and political support for Israel,
Palestinians continue to be denied their
fundamental right to self-determination
and justice.
