Palestinians live in utter misery, Iraq envoy says
By Basil Adas, Correspondent

Baghdad: The Palestinian ambassador in Baghdad said that Palestinians living
in Iraq are living a life of misery, unemployed and are subjected to
abduction and assassination.

Dalil Kassous added: "Dozens of Palestinians are fleeing to Iraqi-Syrian and
Jordanian borders to escape these bad conditions."

The ambassador told Gulf News that the Waleed camp inside Syrian borders
harbours between 1,400- 1,500 Palestinian refugees and the Natif camp
linking Iraqi-Syrian border has 350 refugees, 150 of them are preparing to
leave the camp to Chile, beside the Hasakah camp in Syria that has 310
Palestinians refugees coming from Iraq.

"Of course there are other refugees in Ruweished camp on the Iraqi-Jordanian
border of whom 117 refugees are preparing to depart to Brazil. Recently the
Jordanian authorities informed the United Nation of their intention to close
the camp at the end of this year."

Ruthlessness

According to the records of Labour and Social Affairs Ministry, there are
more than 30,000 Palestinians in Iraq, including Palestinians who fled
Kuwait after the Iraqi occupation in 1990.

Despite the ongoing contacts between Palestinian and Kurdish leaderships,
specifically with top Kurdish leaders, Massoud Barzani and Jalal Talabani,
the conditions of Palestinians are worsening.

The Palestinian ambassador refused to comment on whether the government of
Nouri Al Maliki is still hostile to Palestinians in Iraq, yet some
Palestinian citizens who spoke to Gulf News said that the government of Al
Maliki, especially the Interior Ministry affiliated to the ruling Shiite
coalition, is very hostile to Palestinians.

Osama, a Palestinian citizen, said to Gulf News: "The Shiite forces are
still treating us ruthlessly because they believe that Saddam Hussain
oppressed them using the Palestinian cause and it is the time to take
revenge".

The Kurdish sources revealed that President Barzani offered the Palestinian
president's special envoy, Jibril Al Rajoub, to take in Palestinians living
in Baghdad, if the United Nation financed this process. This offer was made
during Al Rajoub's visit to Arbil five months ago.
