"Bartlett's latest adventure began with a roadblock the Israel Defense Forces had erected at one end of the Palestinian town of Sarra, forcing locals to take a roundabout, hour-long route to drive to the nearby city of Nablus, normally just a short journey away – one of many such travel restrictions imposed on Palestinians by Israeli authorities.
"If somebody needs to get to a hospital, that's an hour's delay," said Bartlett.
"It can be quite serious, and it can also be a daily frustration."
In compliance with what she said was an Israeli court order, villagers recently dismantled the roadblock. But the army ordered it to be restored.
Then villagers hauled it down again.
When Israeli authorities returned this past Friday to put the blockade back up, there was a confrontation pitting local people and several foreign activists, including Bartlett, against Israeli security forces.
Despite exploding tear-gas canisters and other unnerving crowd-control tactics, Bartlett and at least three others installed themselves where the roadblock used to be and refused to budge.
The Israelis hauled them away."
