Agricultural Workers Union: 1250 dunums of land destroyed last week by Israeli army in Gaza: The Palestinian Union of Agricultural Workers issued a report on Wednesday stating that the Israeli army has destroyed 1250 dunums of agricultural lands belonging to farmers in the Gaza strip.  According to the report, the destruction took place during the repeated Israeli invasions of the Gaza strip that targeted the villages of Al-Fukhari and Jahar Al-Deek last week. The union stated that the destruction caused by the Israeli army during those invasions totalled $4 million USD.

 
Israeli PM backs 'upgrade' of West Bank college: Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert Wednesday recognized a move by a controversial Israeli college in the occupied West Bank to upgrade its status without proper authorization. The Judea and Samaria College in the Jewish settlement of Ariel, the second-largest in the Palestinian territory, Wednesday declared itself a "university center" without obtaining the necessary approval from Israel's higher education council.


Palestinian security prisoners' matriculation exams halted: The Israel Prisons Service (IPS) announced on Tuesday that it would discontinue administering the Palestinian matriculation exams to security prisoners due to misconduct on the behalf of exam supervisors provided by the Palestinian Authority.
 
Israeli army accused of desecrating graves in Hebron ; Arab MKs demand immediate investigation : According to residents of the village of Merah-Bakar, Israeli forces invaded the village on Monday night, arresting two members of the Amar family and locking three children inside a car for six hours.  During the invasion, members of the family reported hearing Israeli military bulldozers. After the invasion had ended, the family discovered that the bulldozers had been used to desecrate and destroy the family graves.

Report: Thirty-four Palestinians, including two children, killed by Israeli army fire in July :   The Palestinian Liberation Organization Department of International Affairs on Wednesday issued its monthly report of Israeli attacks on Palestinians for the month of July 2007.  The report stated that 34 Palestinians were killed by the Israeli army during the month, among them two children. Five of the thirty-four were victims of extra-judicial assassination, while another two died when the ambulances transporting them to the hospital were detained at military checkpoints. In addition to the 34 killed, 85 civilians were injured in different Israeli military attacks.

 
UN proposal regarding the Gaza Strip causes a storm: A draft proposed by Qatar and Indonesia to the United Nation Security Council caused a storm of debate between the delegation from Qatar, the Arabic member of the council and the representative of the Palestinian Authority. According to the London-based newspaper, Asharq Al-Awsat (Middle East), the proposal concerned the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. Riad Mansour, the Palestinian representative, described the differences as procedural, saying that the debate ensued "because the draft was prepared without our knowledge."......The representative for Qatar, Nasser Abdul Aziz, told Asharq Al-Awsat that " we don't have any political agenda; all that we are concerned about is to aid the Palestinians.
 
Israeli interrogators threaten detained mother with kidnapping her children:   Israeli interrogators at the Maskobeh detention center have threatened a detained mother with kidnapping her children in a bid to psychologically pressure her during interrogation rounds.

 
Rights group urges Israel to stop demolitions, evictions: A US-based human rights group called on Israel Tuesday to stop house demolitions and forced evictions of Palestinians living in the Jordan Valley region of the occupied West Bank.
 
Palestinian amputees face life of suffering after being denied entry to Israel: Twenty-five-year-old Alaa Uda, a member of the Fatah security forces in Gaza, got caught up in the crossfire between Hamas members on June 14th. A burst of bullets penetrated his lower limbs. He was evacuated to the Shifa Hospital after sustaining severe injury to his bones and blood vessels. Uda underwent a series of operations that failed and the blood supply to his leg was cut off. As Gaza medics are unable to treat complex injuries, the hospital made a request to have him transferred to Israel for treatment.
 
Papers will embarrass Abbas, Hamas says: Hamas leaders who seized control of the Gaza Strip last month say they've uncovered intelligence files that indicate that the Palestinian Authority was gathering information on Pakistan's nuclear program, storing sexual photographs of Palestinian leaders and tracking Islamist forces in other parts of the Middle East .

 
Hayyat newspaper: Abbas and Olmert maintain secret negotiations channel : The London-based Al-Hayyat newspaper has revealed the presence of a secret channel for negotiations established between PA chief Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli premier Ehud Olmert in an effort to entrench the principle of a Palestinian state within provisional borders, which is rejected by a large segment of the Palestinian people.

 
Ali Abunimah discusses Hamas and Fatah on Worldview: On Friday, 27 August 2007, EI's Ali Abunimah appeared on WBEZ Chicago's Worldview, on which he discussed with host Jerome McDonnell the events that have transpired since Hamas routed Fatah in the Gaza Strip last month. Since then, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has created a new government of dubious legality with technocrat and US darling Salam Fayyad. The US and Israel have offered aid money and sent 1,000 M-16 weapons through Jordan to bolster Abbas's forces while Fatah security head Mohammad Dahlan has resigned.

Audio: Crossing the Line interviews Nahr al-Bared nurse: This week on Crossing The Line: host Christopher Brown talks with Melad Salameh, a resident of Nahr al-Bared, who worked as a nurse while the fighting between militants of Fatah al-Islam and the Lebanese army raged on around him. Now living in the Baddawi refugee camp, Salameh talks about the lingering hope that they might be able to return to their homes in Nahr al-Bared.
 
Methodists concerned with Israeli occupation: The New England Conference of the United Methodist Church is advising congregations and individuals to divest their holdings from a wide variety of American corporations that the United Methodists believe support the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land.

51% of Syrians in favour of peace with Israel in exchange for Golan withdrawal:   According to a poll released on Wednesday, 51% of Syrians would support peace with Israel in exchange for an Israeli withdrawal from the Golan Heights and recognition of Syrian sovereignty over the area.

Hamas claims Moscow invite:  According to a high-ranking Hamas official, the Russian government has invited a Hamas delegation to Moscow just days after Russian Premier Vladimir Putin played host to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and promised to weaken the Russian government's ties to the Hamas movement.

Shopkeepers to join W. Bank struggle:
For 13 years, Hebron's Old City has been so carved up by fences, concrete barriers and Israeli army checkpoints that most of its shops have closed. Starting today, the new Palestinian leadership in the West Bank is waging a campaign to get them reopened.

Clowns lighten West Bank life:   In this hard-bitten Palestinian city known for its unruly gunmen and chaotic street clashes triggered by Israeli army raids, the scene at the Askar refugee camp this week was unusual.  A group of clowns and acrobats dressed in red, with painted faces and outlandish props, pranced and danced and juggled and tumbled in a schoolyard before a rapt audience of local children.

 
U.S. endorses Arab peace plan as foundation for Mideast peace : On the first day of her Middle East tour, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Tuesday signed a joint statement with Egypt, Jordan and six Persian Gulf states, endorsing the 2002 Arab peace initiative as one of the foundations for Middle East peace.

Nasrallah: Lebanon war crushed U.S. vision for 'new Middle East': Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah told a mass rally in the southern town of Bint Jbail late Saturday that the Second Lebanon War left the U.S. vision of a 'new Middle East' in shambles, and that his group is 'ready to strike Israel at any time'.
