After a year or so from being stopped by Zionist Jews to appear in Toronto, the very controversial (to the State of Israel and Supporters) award-winning play My Name Is Rachel Corrie will be presented in Toronto (We Hope). Edited from the writings of the late activist Rachel Corrie who was Murdered trying to protect Palestinian homes from being demolished on orders of the State of Israel, the play, directed by Kate Lushington, will be presented by Theatre PANIK at the Tarragon Extra Space , May 29 to June 22 2008 . (That's only if the theatre don't bow to pressure by Zionist Groups and Jewish Groups demands to hault production and not happen).
My Name Is Rachel Corrie is a one-woman show based on the writings 23-year-old Corrie left behind that tell her story from the time she was a small child to March 16, 2003 when she was killed by an Israeli army bulldozer. British actor-director Alan Rickman and Guardian newspaper editor Katharine Viner adapted the activist's writings for the stage.
CanStage planned to mount the play earlier this year but decided against it after outcry from Zionist Jews, The Jewish Lobby, and other groups loyal to the state of Israel. Despite artistic producer Martin Bragg's official statement that it was pulled because it was flat on stage, we all know that CanStage worried it would have upset prominent donors and worried what might happen to them as a result of showing the play.
Rachel Corrie was initially produced by the Royal Court Theatre in London where it played to sold-out audiences and wide acclaim. It has since played the West End, Edinburgh, New York and Seattle.
