A message from Bil'in

At the threshold of the New Year, I write to wish you a new year of freedom and liberation. This has been an unbelievable year for me in both highs and lows. A year during which I have witnessed how, despite repression, ordinary people all across Palestine take to the streets for freedom.

In my village, Bil'in, thousands of people marched on the Wall today to take it down. During the demonstration, one protestor, a 36 year old resident of the village, Jawaher Abu-Rahmah, was critically injured by severe tear-gas inhalation. She is currently hospitalized in Ramallah, unresponsive to medical treatment as the doctors are fighting for her life.

Bil'in has been struggling for almost six years against the Wall that was built on our lands. The illegality and absurdity of this wall has been recognized worldwide, and even by the Israeli Supreme Court, which ruled it must be dismantled over three years ago. Yet the Wall still stands. We, the people of Bil'in, the people of Palestine, have waited enough. Today was therefore declared by the Bil'in Popular Committee Against the Wall and Settlements as the last day of the Wall. Together with our supporters, we managed to bring a substantial part of the wall down but we still have a long way to go.

On a personal note, the beginning of 2011 also strikes notes of fear. In just a few days, on January 3rd, 2011, my trial in front of an Israeli military court will draw into conclusion. Captain Sharon Rivlin, the soldier-judge presiding in my case, will hand down my verdict. If found guilty of "incitement", my next letter will likely be written from inside a prison cell; If found guilty, despite having proved that evidence against me was falsified, I will proudly join my friend and comrade, Abdallah Abu Rahmah, who is now spending his second new year's eve behind bars.  PSCC's media coordinator, my friend and brother in struggle, Israeli activist Jonathan Pollak, will also be going to prison, again, for three months on January 11th, for protesting Israel's siege on Gaza.

We are all facing tremendous challenges, as individuals and as a movement. It is our pride and strength that keeps us going. It is your support and involvement, which is becoming more crucial than ever. Join us – take our struggle forward, so that the year of 2011 will become an historical year of Palestinian liberation and a just peace.

In solidarity,
Mohammad Khatib

The first martyr of 2011 and where we go from here

Dear friends:
We were devastated to hear the news of the first martyr in 2011 being none other than Jawaher, the sister of the martyr Bassem Abu Rahma from Bil'in. Jawaher fainted in yesterday's demonstration but died apparently of this toxic tear gas (a much stronger version with unknown chemicals than used in the West).  Here is a video of the demonstration where Jawaher was injured (she was martyred in hospital the next day) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FErDPdMzWjY
Here is a video of the murder of her brother Bassem over a year ago

Those of you in Bethlehem area and want to get together to collect our thoughts, share our feelings etc, are welcome to come to my house tonight (Saturday until midnight).  I will still go ahead and post my reflection that I wrote last night on the ending year for my thoughts are only deepened by this tragedy. You can also send condolence email to Dr. Rateb Abu Rahma saborahmeh42@yahoo.com

Many writers came up with many ideas about 2010 and even occasionally predictions about 2011. Perhaps the most common theme among rational commentators is that this was the year were truth began to come out in such a large dose that it was hard to sustain mythology and the most common hope for 2011 is to see peace and justice prevail (no more ethnic cleansing, no more killing etc).  When we mention truth we are not talking here merely about wikileaks (what is released here still remains the tip of the iceberg).  We are talking about a number of studies, reports, slips, and scandals that came out that shook those in power.   Gideon Levy said in Haaretz that we may reflect on it as a year of truth for Israel, a year where the fog of mythologies cleared away and the world saw reality for what it is, that Israel is a society that does not desire peace but that is a racist society interested in more land grabs from native Palestinians.  He concludes that "There is nothing like sunshine for disinfecting, so this was a relatively good year." Others brought out the Goldstone report about Israeli massacres in Gaza.  Others mentioned the smuggling of a long tape (out of thousands of cameras, computers, photos, and documents) and the testimony of survivors that showed the true nature of the criminal Israeli attack on humanitarian ships in International waters (not the manufactured tapes of the Israeli military). Palestinians talked about the scandals in the Palestinian authority and now the beginning of eth fall of corruption like with the Husseini and Dahlan affairs (both of them trying to protect themselves by threatening to expose other corruption).
In 2010, a number of events on the personal level were meaningful:
- The death of both my brothers-in-laws leaving both of my sisters widows at a young age (both younger than me).
- The death of other friends and inspiring personalities from Howard Zinn
- We had many run-ins with Israeli occupation authorities.  Arrested twice, detained twice, charged with non-existent "traffic' violation once, gassed and pushed and harassed several times, soldiers invaded our neighborhood looking for me once…
- Took trips to Italy (twice in January and June), to the US (in March), to Turkey (in July), and to Germany (November) speaking about realities under occupation (over 30 talks in total on these trips)
- I gave over 50 other talks to visiting groups in Palestine (delegations from over 20 countries). I also helped put together four national and international conferences.
- We finally got my book completed and published; this took much work during the year.  "Popular Resistance in Palestine: A History of Hope and Empowerment" is already selling well and will be out in the US this week.
- Participated in over 100 events of resistance some like our march through the wall from Bethlehem to Jerusalem during Palm Sunday (when even our Donkey and mules were arrested) and our actions in the last week of the year with over 80 activists from euro-Palestine were truly inspiring and highly successful events
- We started offering services in our new clinical laboratory
- I provided consulting for laboratory in the US in clinical cytogenetics
- Taught courses at Birzeit and Bethlehem Universities
- We did field trips and research on aspects of biodiversity and chromosomes of animals in Palestine
- Supervized research by masters students some of it yielded significant and meaningful results that are of use in Palestine
- Our son visited us from the US during olive harvest and we had a great harvest, twice the output of last year.
Events at the personal level as can be seen above are not disconnected/separate from the bigger picture of happenings around us:
-The Israelis constructed a watch tower at Ush Ghrab and we protested but those in power structures in the town wanted no protests
-There were over 100 meaningful actions of Boycotts, Divestments, and Sanctions around the world
-Palestinian school students invent a seeing walking stick for the blind
-Hundreds of internationals attempt to get into Gaza with a freedom flotilla of ships.  Israeli criminal gangs (pirates) attack them in International waters and murder 9 and kidnap all others.  They finally released them after mistreatment and after stealing all their cameras, videos, and photos (trying to suppress the story).  One video smuggled out showed Israeli commandoes executing human rights activists
- The Haifa conference and the Houston conference and the Stuttgart and other conferences around the world emphasized a one state scenario with the right of return
- Israel attacks the Goldstone report and refuses an international independent investigation of its breeches of International law
-The charade of a peace process was reignited for a while but then quickly extinguished by continued Israeli colonial settlement activities
-Israel's government and public continue to support open racism in both laws proposed and passed in the Knesset and those rulings in certain municipalities and in edicts issued by prominent Rabbis.  From laws to demand loyalty from non-Jews to a "Jewish state" to demanding no dating or marriage between Jews and non-Jews, to denial of right to rent in cities like Safad (used to be Arab city and now Judaicized).
I send an email once a week summarizing events here in Palestine especially on popular resistance and our own thoughts and experiences and these are archived at http://www.qumsiyeh.org/rightsblog2010/
So we look with pride and sadness at the year that passed and look forward to a better year to come. Like life in general, 2010 had lots of tragedies and setbacks but also lots of successes and meaningful moments.  I especially appreciate that we met hundreds of new people during the year; some have become very good friends. He last week for example, we traveled around with nearly a hundred internationals to places like Al-Walaja and Bil'in that so much suffering.  We were energized by the actions even though some of us were injured, some of us arrested.  So we look for 2011 as hopefully a year of peace and justice.  This can only happen if enough people get around ACTIONS (not mere talks), actions like popular resistance, actions like media work, and actions like boycotts, divestments, and sanctions.
Here are 50 actions you can do for Palestine in 2011 http://www.palestinejn.org/resources/resources-for-activism-

Palestinian doctor open legal proceedings against the Israeli War Ministry

by Hiyam Noir
Over 400 Palestinian children was killed during the Zionist massacre, "Operation Cast Lead"  on Gaza two years ago. Many hundreds more were wounded. One of the parents, Izzedin Abuelaish, whose children also were killed in the latest Gaza massacre, is a Gaza doctor, whom also researched the effects of conflict-related stress on Palestinian children, lost three of his daughters, the 15 year-old  Mayar, Aya 13, and Bissan 20, when the Israeli army fired shells at his home in Jabalya in the northern Gaza.
Dr. Abuelaish will on Sunday file a massive damages claim, against the Israeli army, an Israeli newspaper reports. He told the Yedioth Ahronoth during a phone interview from Canada, to where he immigrated following the tragedy, - "I did not have the  ability earlier to file a lawsuit, and until this very moment I did not want to discuss it, it is too painful".

"I have tried to take every step that would allow me to close this family tragedy, with the love for my daughters, yet they didn't leave me a choice. According to the law, the statute of limitations will apply to this case, within a few weeks, except for there can never be any statute of limitations on the blood of my daughters. It will stay with me forever,it's a disaster, impossible to forget."

Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish have said, that if a mistake had been made and an errant tank shell had hit his home, he expected an apology, not excuses. Now he have instructed his attorney to try to avoid a lawsuit and reach a settlement with the Israeli army, according to the report, a rendering that would include both recognition and compensation. However no such settlement has yet been reached. The Israeli War Ministry legal adviser, Ahaz Ben-Ari,announced this week that Abuelaish does not deserve any compensation.
As always manipulative and arrogant, trying to get away with murder and any responsibility for it's criminal conduct around the world and in particular against the Palestinians, the Israelis also this time  find an excuse. The adviser of the Israeli "Ministry of War", Ahaz Ben- Ari, clarified that; - "Despite the severe outcome, from a legal stand point, our stance is that the operation during in which Dr. Abuelaish's family members were hurt was an operation of war. Therefore, the State of Israel does not carry the responsibility for the damage it has caused."

Be certain that of principal concerns every step along the path, and the finale outcome of these legal proceedings against the Israeli War Ministry, will be closely monitored around the world.

the Red Cross and all other rights groups to immediately intervene in putting a stop to violence against Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails,

800 Israeli troops raid flashpoint section of Nafha prison

GAZA, (PIC)-- 800 Israeli troops raided Sunday the 11 section of the Israeli Nafha prison, the Wa'id  prisoners society said, adding that the move was the most recent of a string of attacks amid rising administrative aggression in the facility.
“During the night raid, the prisoners were directly assaulted and all 12 of the section's cells were emptied, and the detainees were taken to old, abandoned sections which are missing the bare necessities of life. They remained there for 48 hours, suffering the cold desert weather.”
The Wa'id society called the attack unprecedented, adding that the nature of the attack, the equipment used, and the circumstances set a dangerous precedent.
The society is calling on the Red Cross and all other rights groups to immediately intervene in putting a stop to violence against Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, saying that the danger that lies in such crimes is that they never reach the media in their true form.
He also called on the media to make stronger efforts to expose the terrorist acts that transpire inside Israeli prisons.

The decade of NEGOCIATIONISTAN...........Happy 2011 !!!

http://reddiarypk.files.wordpress.com/2007/12/n649515112_1863712_9648.jpg
The seventh decade of the longest tragedy,
starts now.....

The end of a decade ??,
Nothing special !! nor unexpected
nothing useful nor constructive

Baghdad went in ashes,
and
Kabul was never rebuilt

President Saddam was hanged,
and
Sharon is still dying (very slowly) in a bed

Gaza was evacuated
so that the Israeli-artillery can work, more efficiently.

Beirut was bombed
so  that their terrorists could try to beat our "terrorists".

In Israel when a president rapes his secretary ,
he gets 4 years in prison,
but when he bombed Beirut and Gaza ,
he got 2 medals.

Ankara and Tehran
became more Arab than Cairo,
Riyadh and Amman, alltogether.

Oussama Ben Ladin retired from "Walt Disney"
and went in hiding at the Bush´s residence-ranch.

The Pope allowed the condoms
but he has said nothing about the prostitution, itself.

A decade full of failed- peace- negotiations
that hardly went further than the opening´s ceremonies

Yasser Arafat was not hanged,
but he was starved in a cellar
until the poison did the rest.

Turkey remembered its own place
and regained its natural identity

Israeli financial companies have invested in Central
and Eastern Europe more than the Americans !!

More money was spent on chasing
the Weapons of Mass Destruction
than any money spent on
the destruction of any Cocaine  fields.

George Bush has surpassed Genghis Khan
and Obama has surpassed Uncle Tom

The Promised-Land became the USA,itself
and Palestine is re-baptised as:
 "Negociationistan"

In the Lebanon the Syrian army has left
just to make room for the Wahhabi-Dollars.

Somalian pirates have been surpassed
by
the Israel-Navy.

The CIA has ,finally ,tolerated leftist-goverments
in South-America ( so far).....

Nothing is new , nothing unexpected
In the next decade the Hackers shall rule the cyberistan
and the Israelis shall relocate in their USA.

By the end of next decade,
if we all are still here ,
remind me to get an Israeli-tourist-visa,
just to be allowed to visit the USA......

Raja Chemayel

Nonetheless ,
I wish to you
and to your loved ones
a
Happy and Healthy
2011
